Bunker construction & reconstruction schemes

Moor Hall GC

In 2018, Moor Hall Golf Club near Sutton Coldfield took the bold decision to rebuild all of their bunkers in one year. It followed a full Historic Research Study and Course Audit produced by Mackenzie & Ebert in 2016 and 2017. Following a tender process, we were selected as golf contractor and work started in July 2019. It was successfully completed in March 2020, despite the wet winter.

It was a substantial project involving more than 80 bunkers, more than a hectare of turf and sanding of 4,100 sq. m of bunkers. Hydroseeding played an important role for the finishing of the fairway bunkers and many fill ins. The works were prioritised at the start of the contract to ensure the seed was sown by early Autumn. One of the main benefits from choosing Hydroseeding is the ability to cover substantial working areas as required when repositioning existing and constructing new fairway bunkers in a cost effective manner. The re-establishment time is also accelerated with potential wash outs and erosion reduced to an absolute minimum.

Verulam Golf Club, St Albans

Reconstruction and installation of our proprietary ‘HyLine’ bunker liner at Verulam Golf Club in Hertfordshire. During the autumn/winter 2013/2014 a total of 32 bunkers were reshaped and lined on nine holes and the second phase is for the completion to all 18 holes, with a total of 58 bunkers. This James Braid course is famous as the home of the Ryder Cup with the trophy being presented by its then captain, Samuel Ryder, in 1926. The work has proved a great success with members and the club’s secretary / manager, Robin Farrer, has commented highly on the works carried out by the company.

Farleigh GC, Surrey

27 Hole Refurbishment commissioned by Marc Hayton of Foxhills Golf and Country Club as part of a multi million pound investment. An intensive programme was successfully achieved with only 8-10 weeks separating each of the three phases. Renovation took place to 9 holes at a time to allow 18 Holes to be played throughout. Situated within the Surrey Downs meant the underlying subsoil was predominantly heavy clay, chalk and flint. A heavy duty lining solution was therefore required to prevent contamination of the bunker sand. Our own specifically developed lining product, HyLine was chosen and successfully installed.

The main reasons why HyLine was selected came down to a combination of the strength and weight of the twin layer interwoven geotextile system with inert mineral filler. Secondly the cost was competitive being pitched midway between the price for ‘up-turned’ turf and the latest ‘branded’ bunker liners. In total over 100 bunkers were constructed with significant amounts of fill material used to create the surrounds moundwork; this was sourced on site from the excavation of new lakes and ditches. Our works also involved the installation of land drainage, the construction of new tees and buggy paths.

Tandridge GC, Surrey

Tandridge has undertaken an exciting commitment to restore the course to the original Harry Colt style. Under the careful direction of architect Frank Pont the bunkers, green surrounds and new mounding are being restored to their original style. The new bunkers, many of which had been grassed over in previous times, have been opened up with new strategically placed fairway bunkers added along with the relocation of tees. This has sympathetically brought the course up to date with today’s modern equipment. The bunkers in the original Colt style are having heather incorporated around the edges, much of which is being regenerated on the course.

Following the successful completion of three holes, to the delight of the members and committee, we were engaged to complete the front nine during the autumn of 2011. The course transformation created quite a buzz, with all involved keen to keep the momentum going. Subsequently work on the back nine was brought forward from August to January 2012 which we are currently completing; the remainder of the back nine holes is programmed for completion this October.

Hardelot – Les Pins Course

Originally designed by Tom Simpson, this is an interesting course situated within pine forested dunes on the North Coast of France. The initial works commenced with the 5th Hole, a par 3 with 2 large bunkers to each side and rear of the green. Over the course of time the original Simpson style and shapes have been lost and are being skilfully reconstructed. The works at both Le Touquet and Hardelot are being carried out with the careful guidance of a new partnership between Frank Pont and Patrice Boissonnas
